Tomorrow Darlaston Town play their first of two away local derby’s against their near-neighbours Wednesfield and Bilston Town.
Both games are one of the fixtures that Darlaston supporters, players and management always look forward to each season. The history between Darlaston Town and Wednesfield has been very good and over the years all games have been closely fought and tomorrow is expected to be no different.
Wednesfield so far, after having an unbeaten start, have lost their last three league games and currently sit in 7th place having played seven games, one more than Darlaston won 3 drawn 1 and lost 3. Their season started as most clubs did in The West Midlands Regional League in the Buildbase F.A. Vase on 19th September where they travelled to fellow West Midlands Regional League Division side A.F.C. Bridgnorth. At full-time the scores were level at 3-3, Wednesfield’s goal scorers were Alexander Ewart, Louie Mason and Ben Novis. Unfortunately, Wednesfield were knocked out of the Buildbase FA Vase at the first hurdle losing 5-4 on penalties.
Their first league game followed seven days later, and they secured a 4-1 opening day win against Wem Town. Once again four different scorers gave Wenny the win, Ellis Blakemore, Louie Mason and Ben Novis scoring their second of the season along with substitute Cameron Osbourne being more than enough to see off their Shropshire rivals.
A second home game followed in mid-week, another high scoring affair, Wednesfield beating Smethwick Rangers 4-3. The scores were level at half-time 3-3. Louie Mason found the net again along with Ben Novis for the second week running, Thomas Taylor and Ellis Blakemore with his second of the season finished the scoring.
Wednesfield’s first game in October was back at the Cottage Ground and they avenged their Buildbase F.A. Vase exit by scoring four goals for the third consecutive game beating Bridgnorth 4-1. Louie Mason continued his goal a game start to the season, Ellis Blakemore scoring his third, Alexander Ewart and Thomas Taylor. Jake Payne was given his marching orders after receiving two yellow cards.
I have already mentioned the two local derby’s and Darlaston will be at Bilston in two weeks time, but Wednesfield have already played probably their nearest rival losing 3-1 at Bilston’s Queen Street ground, Todd Ferrier, Louis Gill and ex-Darlaston Leon Taylor scoring Bilston’s three goals to secure the win and Ben Novis scored for the visitors putting him level in the scoring charts with Louie Mason who broke his goal a game run.
Following a Saturday off Wednesfield travelled to League leaders Shifnal Town in mid-week losing narrowly 2-1 despite another Ben Novis goal, Harry Cunningham and Carl Montague secured the win for the league leaders. Last Saturday Wednesfield travelled to Cradley Town and found themselves on the end of 4-2 reversal. Alexander Ewart and Thomas Taylor scoring Wednesfield’s goals but left-back Jake Griffiths received a straight red card and will miss tomorrow’s game along with Darlaston’s Ryan McAllister who was also sent off last Saturday in the 82nd minute for a tackle against Worcester Raiders and will now miss the next 3 games.
Wednesfield appear to have plenty of danger men, being as they have scored so many goals so far, Ben Novis has scored 5 goals in 8 games, Louie Mason 4 goals, supported well by 3 each from Ellis Blakemore, Alexander Ewart and Thomas Taylor.
Whatever form both sides are in tomorrow, goes out of the window in a local derby. Wednesfield have clearly had the much better start to the season, finding themselves in the top 3 after their 3rd consecutive win. However, with three recent losses some may question Wednesfield’s form, but as we all know form tends to go out the window at local derby’s and it will be very much during tomorrow’s game for 90 minutes who is prepared to stand toe-to-toe towards their opposition and who will be the first to falter.
Darlaston this week meanwhile, after suffering their fifth loss of the season last weekend against Worcester Raiders, Nick’s management team have been looking hard at the playing staff since suffering their fifth loss of the season last Saturday at the Paycare Ground at the hands of now league leader Worcester Raiders. Nick will now look to have some additions to the squad for tomorrow’s fixture but who at the moment is quite uncertain, as whether or not players were registered in time for the fixture.
In any event, whatever players take the field, it is sure to be a cracking game as they usually are, played at a high tempo with no quarter given for each team.
