Tomorrow Saturday 1st September we welcome to The Paycare Ground Warstones Wanderers for the first-round tie in this seasons J.W. Hunt Cup.
The JW Hunt Cup Charity football competition was formed in 1926 to raise funds for the sole benefit of the local blind.
It is named in memory of John William Hunt, a local business man and benefactor. J.W. Hunt founded the local Chillington Tool Company and was a supporter of local charities.
The cup competition has been run every season since 1926/27 season raising over £350,000 for local causes. 2017-18 was the 92nd season of the competition Atherstone Town were crowned winners after beating Wolves Sporting Community 2-0 in the final held at AFC Wulfrunians. Following the final a donation of £10,000 was made to The Beacon Centre.
Warstones Wanderers so far this season have played four games in August. The opening fixture of the season saw them host FC Darlaston, FC Darlaston returning home with the points after a 3-1 win, Ashley Brown scoring Warstones only goal of the game.
A trip to Ludlow was Warstones second game of the season which resulted in a 4-2 win, Ashley Brown once again in the goals scoring a brace, Pinder Deo and Leigh Edwards were the other scorers. They did however suffer a blow finishing the game having 10 men after Nicholas Warsop had been sent off.
Warstones returned to Aldersley to play Church Stretton on 18th August, the result a 2-2 draw Leigh Edwards scoring his second of the season and Alex Trout his first. Last Saturday Warstones travelled to Dell Stadium the new home of Gornal Colts, the match unfortunately finished with a in 3-2 loss to their hosts. Warstones are just below mid-table in 7th place accruing four points and a negative goal difference of -1.
Warstones Wanderers were formed in 2001 with just a under 10’s team. Four years later at the start of the 2005/06 season an adult’s team was formed and they joined the Wolverhampton & District Combination. After their inaugural season they applied to join the West Midlands (Regional) League playing at Parkfields Stadium. Their application was successful and were placed in Division Two at the start of 2006/07 season where they finished in seventh place. During the close season they were promoted into Division One as part pf the league re-organisation.
The club remained in Division One for several years finishing mainly in mid-table ground sharing with Wyrley Rangers, Sporting Khalsa, Bloxwich United finally settling in 2011 at the Goodrich Sports Ground in 2011. Unfortunately, they were forced to resign from the league midway through the 2012/2013 season
The club entered the FA Vase for the first time in the 2008/09 season beating Cradley Town 2–1 on penalties in the second qualifying round before losing 4–0 to Long Eaton United in the first round.
At the start of the 2013/14 season they reapplied to re-join the West Midlands League playing at Aldersley Leisure Village and were re-omitted and placed in Division Two where they have remained until today. Warstones first season saw them finish in ninth place, but since their first season they have finished no lower than sixth in 2016/17 and their best finish third place in 2015/16.
