A second half winner gave Darlaston the all important win needed to keep thier play-off hopes alive

Simon Cox16 Mar - 16:07

A clinical second half finish from Kieran Cook earned Darlaston a big 3 points

Darlaston Town entertained Bedworth United for the first time since 1971/72 when both sides were in the West Midlands Regional League Premier Division. A solitary Kieran Cook goal was enough to settle the game some 53 years later.

With Rivel Mardenborough moving to Step 3 side Redditch United in midweek, and Ben Podmore still struggling with a niggling injury, Darlaston boss Dean Gill made two changes from the side that lost to Boldmere St Michaels seven days earlier. Lewis Gill returning after suspension, and Hayden Carson replacing Podmore reverting to the bench.

The visitors suffered a major blow in the opening minute when striker Ashley Sammons sustained an injury requiring several minutes attention before having to be substituted

The opening exchanges were fairly even with Aaron Bishop and Cook threatening for the home side whilst former Rushall Olympic striker Jonathan Letford looked dangerous for the visitors. As the game settled possession was fairly even with Darlaston posing the stronger goal threat.

The first real chance of the game fell to Lewis Gill. Some excellent work down the left flank resulted in harry Chesterton's cross into the box finding Gill whose first time shot on the turn was well saved by keeper O'Brien.

Darlaston forced several corners but in the absence of Podmore their aerial threat was nullified by the impressive central defensive partnership of Nathan Kelly and Ethan Patterson.

The second half saw the home side having the better of things but posing little goal threat.

The all important goal came on 65 minutes. Hayden Carson won a header in his own half, a quick-thinking Lewis Gill eight yards in his own half, played a superb, lobbed pass into the path of Kieran Cook, the striker drawing keeper O'Brien off his line, before a well-placed left foot shot found the far corner of the keeper's right hand post.

As Darlaston pressed for a second goal, keeper O'Brien saved Mitch Botfield's 12 yard drive with his legs, whilst substitute Leo Wood headed over from 3 yards just seconds after replacing Cook.

For the visitors, Letford was denied a strike at goal by an offside flag, whilst substitute Liam Murphy's miss hit shot hit the back of former Darlaston midfielder Maxwell Ngbeken for a goal kick.

Neither side created any further chances of note, Darlaston running out worthy winners to maintain their faint hopes of a play-off spot.
